The University of Pittsburgh, founded in 1787, is a public, comprehensive university. It offers students an outstanding array of educational options. The Pittsburgh campus is home to 16 schools, ten of which offer undergraduate programs and 14 of which offer graduate programs. Programs are offered in the Colleges of Business Administration and General Studies; the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; the Schools of Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Information Sciences, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work; the Graduate Schools of Public Health and Public and International Affairs; and the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. Students can avail themselves of scholarship programs, undergraduate research opportunities, international studies programs, a semester-at-sea, the Engineering Cooperative Education Program, internships and volunteer outreach programs. The university''s Honors College offers challenging course work and an optional Bachelor of Philosophy degree. Outstanding freshmen are guaranteed admission to several of the graduate schools, including the School of Medicine. Affiliated with the six schools of the health sciences is the internationally renowned UPMC Health System. As a member of the Association of American Universities, the University of Pittsburgh is among the top 61 research institutions in the U.S. and Canada. To supplement the high-quality academic life found at the school the campus'' location in the very livable city of Pittsburgh provides easy access to cultural events, professional sports complexes and other entertainment venues.
